Do you need supplements?
Supplements are just that. Supplements. They should be used only if your diet is inadequate or to optimize you're health, athletic performance and body building capacity. The National Research Council established the Recommended Dietary Allowances. They and many dietitians and physicians believe that adequate amounts of nutrients are obtained from eating a well balanced diet. Most Americans don't follow a healthy nutritional and exercise oriented lifestyle. A majority of physical maladies are due to a nutrient deficient diet and/or low blood sugar.
Lets assume that you are eating several meals each day, which include all the essential food groups. Since the sixties farmers have become increasingly dependent on fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Each crop further reduces the supply of nutrients in the soil to be replaced by those provided by the fertilizers. Although fertilizers will yield superb and marketable produce, however, the insufficient storage and transportation of food contribute to the further depletion of vital vitamins and minerals.
Why do you think animal breeders have made supplementation a way of life? They supplement the diets of their livestock because they know that food alone provides a deficient end to their means. Incorrectly cooking or over cooking further destroys or reduces the nutrients in the foods that finally reach the table.
Other factors to consider are stress and exercise. We all have stress in our lives. Improper nutrition makes it difficult to deal with the day-to-day stresses of life. Of course you should use exercise to help you deal with the pressure of everyday living. If you exercise your body also requires more nutrients than for someone who does not participate in physical activities.
Each person has different nutritional requirements. They will vary depending on our age, physical condition, sex, and activity level.
The truth is that only a very small percentage of people maintain a diet that satisfies their nutritional needs. A lack of knowledge, meal planning, hectic schedules, processed foods and large portions contribute to the demise of the well-balanced diet. With this in mind, supplements, when used properly are a must for everyone.
